Edward arrived at Quebec aboard the Canadian Pacific liner Empress of France, September 12, 1923, made stops in Ottawa and Winnipeg and reached Calgary on the 16th. It was harvest time at the E.P. The Prince of Wales threw himself into the work. Dressed in shabby clothes he stooked oats, chopped sunflowers, pitched hay, and filled the silo. “I’ve even helped muck out the cowhouse,” he boasted to King George V. “I chop and saw up wood and I can assure you it is very hard work indeed!” At breakfast His Royal Highness ate flapjacks and brook trout, for lunch corn on the cob, and at dinner spuds, carrots, and beets fresh from the ground.

While eschewing official engagements, Edward gave lunches and a picnic party for rancher neighbours. “My fellow Albertans,” he addressed them at the picnic, “you are welcome and I hope you enjoy your outing, my ranch is open to you today.” He dropped in on his neighbours in his turn. The Gardner family south of the E.P. woke one morning to find the Prince of Wales eating breakfast with their ranch hands and Chinese cook, Qwon York, after an early morning ride.
